Background Information

Biyi Dawordsmith has been an aficionado of the ‘Niger Delta conflict’ for years. Now he taps that experience in a literary, thriller, mystery novel which elucidates the ‘oil-rich Niger Delta’ war, the defunct Atlantic slave trade, and the ongoing struggles for emancipation in many places around the world. The novel is entitled “Held in the Creeks” and is written from the viewpoint of five characters.

A victim of racial discrimination while he studied in Eastern Europe, Biyi drew from many personal and memorable experiences to come up with plot ideas. “Hardship experiences are universal,” he says. “From Africa to Europe, to the Caribbean, even America.’

‘Held in the Creeks’ captures the dynamism, phases, and intricacies of the Niger Delta struggle. The book has its lighter side as well. An unplanned adventure leads the main character Anita Campbell and her abductors to the core of the creeks.

Additional Information

HELD IN THE CREEKS On arrival in Nigeria for a documentary, CNN reporter Anita Campbell is kidnapped by freedom fighters of the Niger Delta. Afterward, Anita’s abductors discover she has a pointer which later leads them to the custodian of certain coveted treasures. As Anita and her captors sort through requisite grotesque puzzles, Anita is shocked to find a path that draws attention to the years of the Atlantic slave trade, and a trail that justifies the struggles for emancipation in many places around the world. Unless Anita uses her expertise to help her abductors unearth the treasures, she might never return to the States alive. (2012, US Trade Paperback, 458 pages)
