Thomas Hopp is the author of the Dinosaur Wars science fiction series and Peyton McKean mysteries.

Background Information

Thomas P Hopp was born in Seattle, Washington and lived his earliest years in a housing project on the banks of the Duwamish River. Despite a tough start in life, a perfect score on the Graduate Record Exam got him into the biochemistry Ph.D. program at Cornell University Medical College. He studied genetic engineering in Nobel Prize winning labs at Rockefeller University and went on to help found the multi-billion-dollar biotechnology company, Immunex Corporation. He isolated the immune-system hormone, interleukin 1, advised the team that created the blockbuster arthritis treatment, Enbrel, and invented the first commercially successful nanotechnology device, a molecular handle called the Flag epitope.

Tom plays guitar and bass and has performed onstage with blues legend John Lee Hooker and rock supergroups The Kingsmen and The Drifters. He has lived in San Diego and on Manhattan Island, but now resides near his hometown, Seattle.

Thomas has a PhD in Protein Chemistry from Cornell Medical College. He studied fiction writing at the University of Washington and was awarded certificates in both Literary and Commercial Fiction. His novels and short stories have been finalist entries five times in the Pacific Northwest Writers Competition. His novel, The Jihad Virus, took third prize in that event in 2003 and a short story, "Earth Rover," took the same prize in 2005.

Additional Information

Thomas holds multiple patents for his scientific discoveries. He's been invited to lecture around the world, including Brussels, Siena, Budapest, San Francisco, Cambridge and Jerusalem. In addition to his biotechnological discoveries, he's worked with paleontologist Jack Horner excavating bones of the nest-building duckbilled dinosaur, Maiasaura, and published papers on the origin of bird feathers among dinosaurs for brooding their chicks.
