What to say ...
What to say ...
I really have a tough time telling others about me. I have been writing freelance for about 7 years, was a newspaper reporter at one time and have published a book of poetry. Although I'm quite intrigued by the genre of science fiction at the moment, to say that I aspire to be a science fiction writer would not be true.
I am a writer, I don't aspire to be anything. What I want to do is intrigue people when they are reading what I have writen, if it be in the genre of science fiction, then so be it.
Of late my influences have tended to be people such as Stephen Baxter and Ben Bova -- both scifi writers -- but my greatest influences have been Emily Dickenson and Walt Whitman. She for her wit and clever use of words to build such wonderful imagery in such a small space. And he for his depth of feeling and raw emotion infused in his work.
These are both poets, however. When looking at prose influences I would have to choose such modern writer as Joyce Carol Oates and Anne Beatie. Both are female writers who tend to write about the same thing: emotion. I love how they always keep me interested in the mundane and seemingly normal.
This is not to say that I only read such 'literary' works as those of these writers. I also love John Irving -- though his last two novels were simply awful! -- and have just finished "The Historian". This book was wonderful for its richness -- if you don't understand what I mean then you missed out on quite a bit when you read the book.
In short I am interested in anything that is interesting.
