First person in the modern world to walk the 900 mile route of the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Book about that journey, Walking the Trail, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award.

Background Information

Jerry Ellis has written for the New York Times, had four non-fiction books published by Random House and has been a speaker/consultant in Africa, Asia, Europe and throughout the US. He has had five plays produced, and he speaks Spanish, Italian and English. A firm believer that TRAVEL and EXPERIENCE are the KEYS to personal growth and human understanding, Ellis had thumbed enough miles to circle the globe five times by the age of twenty-six. He currently divides his time between living in Rome, Italy and Fort Payne, Alabama.

WALKING THE TRAIL enters display in the National Teachers Hall of Fame on June 17, 2011. Here is the PBS interview with Jerry Ellis that aired 2012.
