Stop that, you're scaring the kids!

Background Information

The youngest of 5 and the only male, even my twin is 9 minutes older! My Dad was injured on the job when I was six months old and never worked again. Mom went to work to support our family and I recall spending most of my youth trying to be very quiet as disturbing Dad was a bad thing! I studied Machine shop at Vocational school as going to College was not an option. We redefined the term 'dirt poor' but amazingly enough did not qualify for assistance. I dropped out of school my second time around in the ninth grade and completed my life's education with honors from the school of hard knocks. ( I got my GED at eighteen and even managed to put three years of nights in at Northeastern University, no degree here either as the 'gypsy trade' left me hanging once again.) When asked what I 'do' I respond that I am a Machinist. This is usually followed by a blank stare from the questioner and a statement such as "You do something with machines, right?" It never ceases to amaze me how few people realize that if it's man made, it or the machine that produces it comes from a machine shop. Machining is called the 'gyspy trade' amongst insiders. Originally coined because you usually had to quit and go to work down the street to get a raise. You weren't worth a nickle to your current employer but the guy down the street would always give you a Quarter to come to work for him and it would start all over again. Now the term has a totally new meaning. You move from shop to shop today as they go 'belly-up' like goldfish in rancid water, one after the other as customers now search globally for the lowest bidder and we can't compete. The young wisely are not taking up the trade and old timers like myself bail out whenever the opportunity presents itself. This leaves me asking the quesion 'What will we do when we can no longer make things for ourselves?' Engineers try every day to 'idiot proof' their designs but in the end, one phrase will always ring true. 'Talent, there is no substitute!'

Birth Place

Accomplishments

I just had my first novel, Hard Reality Published!I designed the original cover of the Machine shop handbook for my class and I authored the essay 'What chemistry means to me' which is still given to each freshmen Chem Lab class to this day!( I would have been Class of 74, wrote the essay in 1971 as a freshman myself.)

Additional Information

I have just completed my second novel, End Play. I am sending this one out for 'proofing' as my peers will attest that proofing your own work is miserable at best! My first novel, Hard Reality, deals with life after a crash of the world's financial markets and the trials of a handful of survivors who work together to build a new society. My second novel deals with how the market came to crash in the first place. The mapping of the human genome is complete and the wealthiest man in the world succeeds in creating a genetic elixir that returns him to youthful vigor. Knowing that nothing succeeds like success, he decides to throw the world into it's own cesspool rather than have unwanted company on his journey into immortality.
