So, in order to drum up a tad more interest and support regarding my first novel, “Tales From The Vinegar Wasteland”, I thought I’d post and reveal a few of its secrets, my intentions, and give away a few details.
1. The novel jumps around quite a bit- My intention here was to create a feeling like someone lifting the needle on a record album. Each chapter was supposed to be a different song. So much so, that at one point, the writing for each chapter could have theoretically been done by different writers. I undid most of this, feeling people wouldn’t get it, and it just looked overly wordy and strange as the end result. But yes, the story constantly jumps, like someone’s drunken uncle walking into the turntable.
2. Lots of 4th wall breakage- I must admit, I am a character in my own work. The idea has always intrigued me, and while it may be a bit egotistical to write yourself into your work, I enjoy some of the elements it added to the story.
3.It is extremely random (but not)- Lots of dada-esque elements added, from chapter titles, to formatting. You ever get that feeling that this may be your one shot, so you’d better pull out all the stops? Vinegar Wasteland does that. If it’s the only thing I ever officially release, I attempted to break as much ground as I was able to do with it.
4.It is self referencing- Believe me, this book is very aware of its own existence.
5. The are secret messages encoded into it- Anagrams, binary coding, even one or two using bible code software for those willing to search them out.
6. The story takes place earlier this century- I have a great love for that time period (the 20‘s-30‘s). Flappers, the beginning of dada and surrealism, the discovery of LSD, lots of strange breakthroughs, interest in the occult and spiritualism, odd belief systems, the beginning of the auto and airplane, and the telephone and radio. Fatima. Early motion pictures. Anything was possible.
7. It’s a book, you can read it- You have my personal guarantee that the pages contain words. And there are lots of them!
As a bonus, the book includes “And Other Blurry Snapshots” a collection of some of my best shorts. Some never before seen!
Oh, and the thing is funny too!
