A Florida Native

Background Information

I was raised in Florida by parents of English immigrants and colonial American backgrounds. After graduation from Florida State University, I taught 7th grade social studies for 18 years. Having written many projects for use in the classroom (due to lack of books), writing became second nature to me. For many years after teaching I also ran the family business, Lucky's Flea Market and Storage, a great one-on-one people business. With early retirement, I worked on my interests of genealogy and writing. I was self-taught how to develop and run my own web sites. From writing many family stories for the web sites I started submitting my non-fiction stories to national magazines. There was not a better feeling than seeing your own words in print and the satisfaction that you enlighten other individuals.

In 2008, the book titled "O. B. Padgett - A Florida Son" was published. It covers the life of one of Florida's youngest Chief of Police during the 1920s when he had to deal with bootleggers and notorious outlaws.

Additional Information

In March 2006, I spoke and gave a visual presentation on the history of the sailing ship, "Prins Valdemar aka Miami Aquarium" at the South Florida Historical Museum. At the end of 2006, there will be a feature article written by me on the ship "Prins Valdemar" for the "South Florida History Magazine". Before the end of 2006 additional articles were published by "Family Chronicle Magazine". In September 2006, my first book, "Legends - Family Stories and Myths" was published using Lulu Publisher of N.C. Then in paperback form with I-Proclaim in December 2006. In early 2007, several additional articles to be published, including "The Copper Image" in "Genealogical Helper Magazine"- appeared May 2007. Two articles,"A Violent Death" and "I Found It On eBay" appeared in Family Chronicle Magazine (Jan. 2007 issue). In ANCESTRY MAGAZINE, Jan-Feb. 2007 issue is the article titled, "The Real Story". For the first time, now a published article in the HISTORY MAGAZINE - June 2007 issue, titled "The Defiant Flag Waver". This article covers about Joseph Groff, a citizen of Frederick, MD - a town in 1861 divided in its support of the Southern Rebellion and the North Union. Between late 2007 and the end of 2009, several magazine articles have been published. Some new magazine were added, including Indian River Magazine, Everton's Genealogical Helper, Discovering Family History and Internet Genealogy. Several new public speaking engagements have been completed between 2007 and 2011 covering the books written and additional historical topics. In December 2009, Alice provided her three books in ebook form for the new program called 'Operation eBook Drop' which helps secure ebook formatted books free to all American troops stationed overseas. There are many published articles presently on e-magazines such as: Associated Content and Suite 101. Since August 2010 the majority of the writings and research on numerous genealogical topics for a new web site FamilyTree.com has been done by me. I keep a genealogy blog on the site.
