Shields traveled extensively during his military career and was exposed to the cultures and local environments of many countries. These experiences, and the multiple opportunities to work with military and police agencies around the world, have influenced his writing. In addition, his love of adventure stories such as those of Horatio Hornblower and Sharp's Rifles have influenced him since boyhood.
