Nice guys don't finish last, we just want to be sure no one gets left behind.

Background Information

I began writing poetry seriously in the early morning hours following the murder of John Lennon. I had been up all night, listening to a radio station that was playing his music continuously, when the song Aisumasen (I'm Sorry), from the Mind Games LP, came on. It inspired me to write a poem that helped resolve a personal conflict I was involved with, which in turn allowed the other person to forgive me for my transgressions.
Up until then, poetry was simply something I had to write in English class from time to time. After that I realized that through the expression of my feelings, I had made a positive change in both of our lives. The feeling I came away with from that experience has guided my hand in writing poetry for more than 25 years.
It holds special significance to me beyond that, as John Lennon had been a tremendous influence in my life and helped form the person I am today. Others who have influenced me include Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King Jr., Richard M. Nixon, though in unexpected ways, and Jimmy Carter. That's a list I could continue with at various levels, but in general, nearly everyone has influenced me to some degree, either from admiring them and their deeds or recognizing their negative impact on the world and making a conscious decision not to emulate their behavior. I give credit to Johnny Carson and comedians such as Bill Cosby, George Carlin and Gallagher for my sense of humor, though it goes far beyond that short list.
As far as poetry goes, I donít really have any influences. There are many I admire, but I have never tried to write like anyone else. I only write when I feel inspired to write, which I understand is unlike most other poets. I have read a lot of ďhow toĒ books and they always say to write as often as possible. While I agree that the more one writes, the better one becomes, but for me, I am not interested in perfection, I simply want to express what is in my heart and to do so as honestly as I can. I donít want to fill pages upon pages with empty words, I want to be sure that each word is what I feel and isnít influenced by the potential of publication or recompense.††

I have published two books, "Seeds and Weeds", and "Passion & Pain". Both are available through @ . For some reason the link this site provides to my ISBN's does not lead to my books, but instead a alphabetical list of authors in which my name is lost in obscurity amidst seveal other J Johnson's. It seems odd that the system asks for specific ISBN numbers but then goes by author name. What's the point in that?

Additional Information

Seeds And Weeds is a philosophically expressive compilation of poetry and prose, offering progressive views on equality, justice, politics, peace, war, environment, nature, fate, faith, family, friendship, introspection, and poetic inspiration. The poems within are more than simply a collection of verse with splashes of imagery. Written in the moment, the poetry here is sometimes harsh, but always honest. Digging deeply into the essence of poetic creation, they have not been conjured from the casual observations on life that some would accept as poetic inspiration. These works are the raw emotions articulated in words that have been inspired by a lifetime of experiences. Creatively expressed in rhyme and reason, this book challenges the mind and heart to find a better way through observations and feelings on the rise and fall of character.

This website contains excerpts of my book with additional links to personal interests of mine. Seeds And Weeds challenges the mind and heart to find a better way through observations and feelings on the growth and strangulation of character, creatively expressed in rhyme and reason. Do you know of someone who has allowed pride to grow into a colossal weed and strangle those who will not bow down before his regime? Will we silently witness the simultaneous strangulation of Humanity and Mother Nature at the hands of the foulest fertilizer in the world? It's time to weed the garden!

A poetry community I have been a member of off and on for several years. I used to be more involved here, but I still manage to get there a few times each month and drop by the forums to stir things up. It's a great site to intermingle with other poets in a virtual way. Membership is free but screened by other members and you must write a brief essay on why you want to become a member. Feedback is given, but usually positve unless you ask for critique. You will need to spend some time reading others and commenting on their work to get them to read yours, but they will. And since there are many highly talented poets there, it's not a laborous thing to read and comment on their works. I have a tendancy to butt heads with the Admins there, but have only been kicked out once. But still, I went back, so I take the good with the bad, as there is no Utopia, even on the internet.
