Keep on writing and never give up. It took more than 20 years to get my first book published. If there's a voice in you that begs to be heard, it will be heard given enough patience and hard work.

Background Information

Having come of age in the Sixties, I was greatly influenced by the events of that turbulent era. Major literary influences include: Jack Kerouac, Thomas Wolfe ("You Can't Go Home Again"), Henry Miller, Joseph Conrad, Frederick Prokosch, and Mark Twain. I'm the author of three expatriate novels, an ESL novella/textbook, and several articles on teaching English in Japan.

"Looking for the Summer" is about a Vietnam War conscientious objector's adventures and search for identity on the road from Paris to Calcutta in 1977. "Toraware" is a psychological suspense story about the obsessive relationship of three misfits from different cultural backgrounds in 1980s Kobe, Japan. "The Many Roads to Japan" tells the story of a conscientious objector's vicissitudes in life before finding his niche in Japan. "Autumn Shadows in August" is an hallucinogenic mid-life crisis/adventure, and homage to Malcolm Lowry and Hermann Hesse.

Accomplishments

The RKB television station produced a 30-minute documentary on my life, books, teaching, and peace education activities in April 2004. It was broadcast in the nine western prefectures of Japan. Knowbetter.com, Alternative Approaches Magazine, Scribesworld, and CultureVulture.net have all given "Looking for the Summer" their highest review ratings.

The Many Roads to Japan
"The Many Roads to Japan" is a free online ESL novella/textbook about a Vietnam War war resister's adventures and search for identity over a 14-year period. There are over 50 links, several pictures, end-of-chapter comprehension and discussion questions, my recording of the answers, and more. Good for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), peace education, group or self study. Aimed at intermediate and above ESL students, the story is also a good read for native speakers. "The Many Roads to Japan" is also available in trade paperback from Lulu.com at http://www.lulu.com/robertnorris
