I am a novelist under the pen name E.R. Law, author of the "Dark Sands" fantasy series, as well as a screenwriter who often operates under the less pretentious credit of, simply, Evan Law. Though screenwriting is what pays the bills, my love of writing novels (when I can spare the time!) continues unabated. I currently reside in Noblesville, Indiana.

Background Information

As an author, I tend toward works of fantasy. My chief influences in this field are, of course, J.R.R. Tolkien (whose "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" series first inspired me to write at age 13) and Robert E. Howard (whose darker, grittier fantasy most affects my current work). Some other key influences would be George R.R. Martin, David Gemmell and Lloyd Alexander.

I am currently wrapping up the "Dark Sands" 'trilogy, which I began, more or less, back in 1994. It was conceived as a standalone novel, but I later adapted it into a trilogy due to the cost of publishing the books. I chose to publish them myself under the banner of Ronin Sword Publishing due to the fact that "Dark Sands" is far too personal for me to compromise by publishing it in any other fashion. I have learned from experience, especially with my work in feature films, that far too often the writer's vision (such as it is) can be compromised (for better or worse). And, wouldn't you know it, the only publisher that was willing to print the book 'as is,' closed its doors in 2006 just two months before the book's scheduled release. So, self-publishing seemed, to me, like the best alternative. I would rather release an obscure work that I'm proud of than one I felt I made concessions on, especially when it's so personal to me to begin with. If necessary, that is -- I'd prefer not to be obscure, as any author would!

Another thing in the works for me, tentatively entitled "Sons of Halliden," which, in one form or another I've also been developing since 1994 (and actually writing since 2004), should hopefully be finished within the decade. If I'm lucky, that is! A much darker fantasy story in the Robert E. Howard tradition, it will depict an alternate history medeival North America besieged by sinister supernatural forces. I'm thrilled with the project thus far, but I could certainly use the time to complete it. And at the rate I'm going, time isn't exactly on my side, as my work in film continues to be the most lucrative while novels are more of a passionate hobby. With novels, I just write for myself. With movies, it's a combined effort every single time.

As a screenwriter, I am generally interested in exploring more diverse genres, and have an admitted disposition toward film noir and flat out action style endeavors -- a far cry from my fantasy slant as an author. My list of favorite films runs the gamut between "Taxi Driver," "Big Trouble in Little China," and "The 13th Warrior"... among others. I almost always co-write with my brother Chad Law in this department.

I currently have two produced films and several others in the works. "Hero Wanted" (2008) stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Ray Liotta, and "The Hit List" (2010) stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Cole Hauser. "Six Bullets," starring the legendary action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, is slated for 2012, and a gangster pick entitled "The Irishman" should hopefully be gearing up as well.

Currently, the awesomely talented artist Kewber Baal is working with us on a graphic novel entitled "Dead of Winter."
