Born during the great depression, and growing up during the late 30's and early 40's, our experiences were different than most of the people today have known. Then having been a veteran of the Korean war, and a working stiff all my life, I decided to put some things in writing for the kids to read after I'm gone. It irks me that with so many killed in the "police Action" in Korea, that it hasn't really been given it's place in our History. Especially now, when most of the survivors are in the last stages of their life. When our countries wars are mentioned in any articles, the Korean War is the most forgotten, and least mentioned. The current war with Iraq is just over 4 years old, with 4000 killed. But the 3 year war in Korea had 54,000 of our troops killed, with 103,000 wounded.
My letter to the editor, published in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
After reading the article ("Vetererans reflect on sobering cost of freedom today", June 28 South) I see that the Korean war is still the forgotten war. Having served in that 37 month non-war, I remember it well, and I would expect our 54,000 or more troops who died in it, and the 103,248 wounded, to at least get an honorable mention, in the defense of our country, and freedom. Unlike the 16 year war in Vietnam, we did prevent the takeover by the Communists of a now flourishing, and allied Republic of South Korea.
