My childhood and preteen years were spent as a hermit in my room, where I wrote make-believe stories, composed poems, painted pictures, sketched and read 800-page books like The Count of Monte Cristo and Wuthering Heights and still didn’t want the story to end. In fact, instead of being sent to my room for punishment, my parents would make me go outside and play because they knew that staying in my room would not be a punishment! As a writer today, I get inspiration from all forms of creative expression such as visual art, music, dramatic arts, dance, and of course great writing. Almost anything can stimulate an idea for me to draw sparks of inspiration from. Then, depending on the image it may grow into something if it's good or fizzle out and be unusable. For me, ideas can sprout from reading a newspaper clipping, from sitting on a metro listening to a conversation, from watching and listening to an exchange take place between a mother and child for instance---from attending a concert (the music might stimulate me to wonder about the musician). I observe people and my surroundings in order to tap into the feelings, motives and actions of people.
