I have been writing poetry for a couple of years which keeps me sane.I enjoy writing about nature ,Rathlin Island and protest poetry the odd time. I went to Rathlin Island,Northern Ireland's only inhabited island, in my early twenties seeking my family roots where I fell in love with my late husband ,married and settled down to family life. The island was undeveloped at that time and life was very different in fact a real challenge but I loved living there. The island community,it's way of living and it's unique part of Ulster's history so rich in folklore, became the defining feature of my life. It was with great sorrow I had to leave for my children's sake when their father died in a tragic diving accident 14 years ago.
I rebuilt a life of a kind and managed to survive even when I longed every day to return but so far it hasn't been possible. I've started to write about my life on the island with the charismatic character, my late husband. His sheer endevours and persuasive personality coupled with tremendous drive and energy, transformed the island and along the way impressed politicians across the divide and even managed by audacious efforts, to persuade the likes of Richard Branson the Virgin company tycoon to support his cause for a better future for the island in serious decline. All in all I had a life so different from the usual I find it difficult to believe I actually lived it and long to share it with the public who can't imagine a way of life without all the modern advantages we take for granted today.
Many thanks to my friends and most of all my lovely children and grandchildren whose love and support makes this possible.
