When I was a child, I wanted to be everyone in the world, when I grew up (except when they were sick). I had to leave school and go to work when I was 17, and was more or less alone and self-supporting until I married. Without too much in the way of family or social constraints, I did as I pleased, working at whatever struck some momentary fancy (or wherever they'd hire me), changing jobs as if I were trying on clothes until I figured out what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be. So my experiences ranged from factory assembly line to stock broker and all points in between (I didn't grow up to be "everyone", but I got through a pretty long check list of Personal Goals.) I worked for the last seven years as a software designer, developer and product manager, though intermittantly I stepped in as a technical writer or proofreader. I quit a few months back to focus on writing.
