"I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Background Information

C. Patrick Durkin holds a BA in English Literature from Marywood University and was recipient of the institution's J. Harold Brislin award for Excellence in Creative Writing, Spring 2001. He pursued graduate studies at Binghamton University, studying poetry with writers such as Maria Maziotti Gillan, Greg Razran, J.E. Wei, and Tony Medina. He also studied with noted critic on Epic Poetry and Oral Tradition, Isidore Okpewho. C. Patrick Durkin describes his poetry as a balance between imagist and confessional poetry---focusing on memory, place, and other facets of everyday life. Major influences are: Seamus Heaney, Maria Gillan, French Symbolists, Basho, and Homer. "Perhaps the most difficult part of the writing process," C. Patrick says, "is the struggle one has with invention and tradition. On one side, you want to explore new areas. For example, the poetry of the modern world. What kind of symbolism can be found in a Treo Smartphone? Another part of the equation is knowledge of the writers that came before you. You don't want to neglect their existence nor do you want to start some sort of imitation that takes away from your own voice. Balance is key." C. Patrick Durkin is currently completing a manuscript of poetry for publication and is continuing his study of classical and modern poetics.
