Jafar Alam first got into poetry in 2003 ... Through the influence of two friends, he was shown the world of Persian and Arab poetry and the works of such greats as Rumi, Hafez, Shabistari, Darwish and many more ... He began performing spoken word poetry in 2007 ... He later developed a taste for urban poetry ... Inspired by the writings of such brilliant minds as Langston Hughes, Sonia Sanchez and Saul Williams ... Jafar published his debut book of poetry in March 2010 ... He is a two time Slam Poetry champion ... Alam mentions several influences: Charles Bukowski, Saul Williams, Basquiat, Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, Bell Hooks, Anaais Nain, Rumi, Gibran ...
