I was in a war once. It was extremely interesting but my side ended up losing. All of my subsequent endeavors have more or less followed suit. These have included drawing a comic strip, bussing tables, farm work, moving to Iceland, selling paintings, moving back to America, driving a fork truck, designing signs, and running corporate web sites. I'm presently collecting unemployment and waiting for Obama to Save the World.
I have been influenced by nearly every creative person I have ever encountered. Heinlein was a god to me as a kid, followed by Picasso, then Crumb. My major creative outlet of the last two decades has been fiction writing. I've had nothing published, but I have big hopes for the latest novel.
