My interest in the welfare of children began years ago when I was a high school teacher and coach. As a young teacher, I enjoyed mentoring many of my students and athletes.
Sponsoring children in developing nations, through international charitable organizations, was another avenue for helping children in need. It was especially gratifying to me to serve as a court appointed surrogate parent for two young sibling in the Arizona foster care system.
I have always dreamed of creating my family through adoption. My vision became a reality in 1999, when the adoption of my son, Joshua, became final. The 9 Lives Trilogy is a fictionalized work inspired by our lives together.
Josh suffers from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. FASD is an umbrella term to describe the physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral disabilities caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Joshua's birth mother drank alcohol during her pregnancy with him. The alcohol that she drank, damaged his developing brain.
FASD is 100% preventable. I wrote this series to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. These novels are written for preteens, teenagers, those living with FASD, their families and friends.
I am hoping that we can promote the births of healthy, alcohol and drug free babies in the future, and provide understanding and support to those struggling with the hardship of FASD.
