When I was a child at school I was taught traditional poetry; I was brought up on a staple literary diet of Marlowe, Pope, Byron, Keats, Shelley, Coleridge and others from those eras. It is no accdent therefore that when I write now, I tend to write in a formal style using meter and (usually) rhyme..I do not dislike "modern" or "free" verse although I have been criticised by "modernists" for allowing myself to be "shackled" by the demands of formal poetry. If that is the case, long may it continue.
