Annis Pratt taught English until, after publishing three nonfiction books, she threw her professorship out the window to write novels.

Background Information

Although Annis Pratt grew up in New York City, she makes her home in the midwest, where, for many years, she taught English and  Creative Writing at the University of
Wisconsin.  There she canoed the Wisconsin and Kickapoo Rivers, and explored Lakes Mendota and Wingra, learning all about the percussion of coots, the signals of herons, and where mushrooms and fiddleheads can be found. Later, she moved to Michigan, where she kayaks The Betsie River. That is how she learned how dragflies mate (stuck together in a circle), why bats swim, where salmon spawn, how otters spend their evenings and how mink mothers get their kits across a the river. Her sailing and kayaking adventures provide her exuberantly detailed natural settings.

Her all time favorite books are J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring series, for his plot technique of alternating between bad times and better days (catastrophes and eucatastropes) and his detailed natural settings.   The Marshlander Trilogy, of which the first volume, The Marshlanders, was published in paperback and E book form with I Universe in 2010 and the second volume, Fly Out of the Darkness, was published as an E book in 2012. Pratt's page-turning trilogy is about the struggle between an earth-loving, self-sustaining people and a cabal of merchants and ministers who want to drain their wetlands for agricultural development.

Accomplishments

Annis Pratt's second book, Archetypal Patterns in Women's Fiction, was published in England and America and won First Prize from the Council for Wisconsin Writers. Her third book, Dancing With Goddesses, won Choice's Award for the Outstanding Academic Book of the Year. Clarissa Pinkola Estes admired it and wrote the blurb for the paperback edition.

On this blog I write about what goes on as I create The Marshlanders Trilogy. I tell about the construction of little boats called coracles, I describe the history of the game of hopscotch, and I tell why children's games are so important in this series.

Speculative Fiction Group
I look into the question of genre in this discussion group: can I squeeze the trilogy into speculative fiction or historical fantasy?
