I have a PhD in comparative literature and have taught in colleges for many years. My main influences have been authors of speculative fiction such as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and Marion Zimmer Bradley, Herman Melville and Vladimir Nabokov, whose command of language and style is great enough to make any author weep with envy, are my two favorite writers.
In my most recent fiction, I have dwelled on themes that are crucial for the future of humanity--the dangers of climate change and the importance of spiritually-based cooperation between cultures. I have tried to make difficult and often controversial material accessible to young readers and to stimulate the idealism that makes them the dreamers, movers, and shakers that I know they are or can become.
