Gibbs A. Williams Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst, supervisor, and author in New York City.
As far back as I can remember being conscious I have been a truth seeker - wishing to answer the basic questions of life: who am I really, what do I really want, what is the meaning of life, what is the meaning of my life, how do I know, how can I make meaningful connections both with myself and others.
At 19 - in the midst of a state of personal chaos - I began a journal that continued for the next 37 years. In the midest of it - I fortunately recorded 19 what I consider to be highly meaningful coincidences (synchronicities) which became the core material for my soon to be released first published book:
The Evolving Self, The Personal Unconscious, and the Creative Process
This book is the result of a 44 year investigation of the nature and uses of synchronicities. It is also an important work as it is one of two serious books on this subject that challenges the partially psychodynamic and partly mystical/magical position of Jung and his adherents - a theory that has been the supreme authority for the last 54 years.
My original theory is competely naturalistic in the sense that it concludes that these intellectually challenging and perplexing occurrences are scientifically understood as self generated "messages" coming from an individual's connection with his creative process.
Additionally I have been working on a memoir of a life defining experience as a budding psychotherapist working as a psychologist in a pioneering therapeutic community called Odyssey House - rehabilitating heroin addicts in the turbulent sixties. At Odyysey I experienced the best and the worst of being on the front lines of the so called war on addiction.
I have gone through numerous revisions honing my writing skills and was recently told by a potential publisher that they are impressed with my first three chapters and wish to see the remainder.
Additionally, my brother and I have just published on line a resource manual helping Mental Health workers, and interested lay persons to help others in need to effectively cope with their stress, anxiety, depression and frustration without using medication. The manual is called Attitude Shifting and may be viewed at:
