I was born in Kenya at the time of the Mau Mau uprising so as it was getting just a bit too hot., my father was posted back to the UK, and, until he retired from the army we stayed in Shropshire. I grew up in Basildon in Essex and at the age of 17 with nothing better to do; I too joined the army. I met my wife while still serving and we got married when I left.
I joined the Northern Lighthouse Board as a lighthouse keeper in 1979. Redundancy through automation forced me to leave the service in 1992.
Up until I retired from general work through ill health I have dipped my toes in all sorts of fields of employment yet never found the same kind of satisfaction and rewards with that of being a lighthouse keeper. Now I find the same kind of rewards from writing about lighthouse related subjects.
