Chicagoan Carolyn Moncel is a former public relations executive. She has lived in Paris and now Lausanne, Switzerland with her family, Encounters in Paris is her first work of fiction.

Background Information

A media consultant by day and budding short story writer by night, I take my inspiration from everywhere. Most of my stories are set in places where I have lived: Chicago, Paris and Geneva.

I started writing because I realized that it's very difficult for me not to tell a story. I come from a family of storytellers, so I've heard some sort of tale all my life. I tell stories to my family, friends and even my clients. Even my non-fiction, business articles usually end with a moral.   My influences include James Baldwin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Updike, Philip Roth and Zadie Smith.

Short stories and novellas are my preferred genres because they allow me to describe brief moments in time and get off the page. I like to make readers think, but I also like to leave them with a bit of suspense. My first collection of short stories, called Encounters in Paris, is available now in both paperback and digital formats. My next collection of short stories, 5 Reasons to Leave a Lover, debuts in fall 2011.

Additional Information

PRAISE FOR Encounters of Paris – A Collection of Short Stories "Paris seems like the most romantic thing in the world, until you live there. "Encounters in Paris" is a collection of short stories from Carolyn Moncel and her protagonist Ellery Roulet, a nearing middle age woman working in Paris and finding out while there is love, there is also everything you hate about love. A fun read that blends plenty of romance, "Encounters in Paris" is quite the pick, recommended." —The Midwest Book Review "...The stories are fiction but feel more like a memoir of sorts. I was drawn to the main character from the instant I started reading. Her trials are ones most people face at some point in their life. Her stories show that with every end there is also a beginning. I enjoyed the authors writing as it flowed easily, guiding me along the way..." -ReaderViews.com "The author does an excellent job of engrossing readers in the language, atmosphere, and culture of Paris, also addressing topics such as infidelity, trust, and regret. Hopefully the author will continue Ellerys story, because I believe there is so much more waiting in the wings for the main character." 5 Stars! -OOSA Online Book Clubs "The author was able to create situations which appear ordinary, but were more richly complex than what meets the eye. While the stories may use few words to describe the situations, the words are smoothly elegant and polished." -APOOO BookClub
