I would like to write one thing as memorable as Andre Bazin's bon mot of a "corpse on reprieve."

Background Information

My background is nondescript, pleasantly boring, and very middle class.  I'm a closet existentialist. I've had good jobs and bad jobs.  Nothing sticks out.  I love mysteries, hardboiled crime, noir (film and literature)--with me, it's always the harderboiled, the better.  My reading influences are many but two stand out, and I write their names with the greatest admiration:  David L. Lindsey, one of the most elegant stylists I have ever read; the other is Martin Cruz Smith.  I have read and re-read all the Arkady Renko books many times, and I still find Renko's persona to be the most fascinating, attractive, and heroic in modern literature.  These authors please me mightily with the way they handle words and surpass whetever constitutes genre in mystery fiction writing.

Of personal influences, I have two, but I would prefer not to name anyone publicly.

I live in a small town in Northeastern Ohio.  I never travel.  I have a great view of the sunsets over Lake Erie.  Life is pretty good.

Birth Place
Ashtabula, OH USA

A story I wrote in 2009, "The Frotteur in the Dark," was named one of 6 Best Of in a very good literary webzine published out of Chicago.

Additional Information

I had been writing private eye stories of my detective character for several years and I was pleased that Grand Mal Press accepted a longer Haftmann manuscript for publication this year.

Haftmann's Rules
The plot concerns a search for a missing girl, a brilliant maniac, and a secret society of racists.

"The Dog returneth to His Vomit"
This Thomas Haftmann story is typical of those I've recently published in various webzines like Thrillers, Killers, 'n' Chillers, A Twist of Noir, and Sex and Murder Magazine.
