I was born in Hollywood. It doesn't really mean anything, but it has always been fun to say. Being a guy, I grew up doing guy things. I loved sports, which was a challenge for this book because I didn't want to overdo my sports focus. But I figured there will be some who do like this, so I rationalized putting some in. I hope I didn't go overboard. Since I was from LA, I grew up a Dodger fan. I did put in a page or two about this. It was in my blood. Funny thing, I now live in San Jose, which neighbors San Francisco, and I actually now root for the San Francisco Giants who were our arch enemies when I was young.
While most of my life has been spent on the west coast, my college years were spent in the middle of the country, and I also had a work assignment on the east coast near New York for two years. These opportunities gave me a chance to see and appreciate the rest of our country. While we were on the east coast, we took every opportunity we could to travel up and down the coast seeing both the countryside and the rich heritage that was there. We loved it. And guess what? I rooted for the New York teams while I was there.
Many of my stories and experiences come from my family. I hope we weren't too unusual. I grew up in a family of six with parents, two brothers and a sister. I had an older brother who was just eighteen months older. We did a lot together. I am also the parents of three children, all boys. Needless to say, I've got boy experiences covered. Thank goodness I had a sister so I've had some experience here also. There was a time I don't think I would have said that. After all, she was just fifteen months younger.
Until recently, my career has been in finance. I got an early start with my first job working in the Accounting Department of the Los Angeles Municipal Court. I handled the record keeping of bail money. Don't worry, it was all double verified. It was a great job for someone still in high school, and maybe set my course for life. Coming out of college I got a finance job with IBM and have worked for them for a number of years. So I have effectively spent my career telling people they are spending too much. Sometimes they listen. I've had two breaks from finance. The first was during college when I put myself through school by teaching tennis. The second came when I found myself writing this book.
