My empathy for people influenced my career choice as a caregiver, and also my novel, The Keeper, which is dedicated to victims of trauma.
Because of an early childhood trauma, the protagonist of the novel, Dr. Seacrest, has become obsessed with his own perfection. When I was a child in Arizona my parents decorated our home with beautiful Navaho rugs. I used to study these rugs for hours and eventually noticed in each a mistake in the design. I pointed this out to my mother and she explained the error was deliberate, to remind the artist that no matter how beautiful their creation, only God is perfect.
