"In this place the air he breathed was fresher, the sun was brighter, and life was filled with hope." -taken from the short story "Unwelcome Warmth"

Background Information

Believe it or not, my passion for storytelling truly hit when my father brought home a graphic novel from the bookstore, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Volume II. As an eight year old, I had developed a newfound obsession with the cartoon show and my father thought I would love the comics, on which the show was based, even more.

Boy was he right.

Reading that graphic novel, along with the three others in the set, catalyzed a love affair with the superhero genre and I found myself dragging my brother and father to comic book shops and conventions; spending all my allowance, and whatever else I could scrounge up, on comics and graphic novels; trading with friends and kids I didn't even know. Anything to stay immersed in comic book culture.

By the time I hit middle school, however, I needed something more, and that's when I read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. As exciting as comics were and as much as I loved them, none of those issues resonated with me in a profoundly emotional way. Of Mice and Men forced me to question my own views on life and ponder its meaning, and wonder if it had one at all. Comics aspired to that, and reached that level with peak-works like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, but monthly serials relied more on delivering easily attainable pleasures and refrained from pushing the reader too hard.

Other books of my youth, like My Brother Sam is Dead, the Dragonlance fantasy series, The Great Gatsby, Macbeth, Frankenstein and much later everything by Cormac McCarthy and George Saunders, began to impact me on an equal level, and I'd have to credit them all as influences.

I strive to craft an engaging plot within a literary framework. I want my characters to be fully developed; to feel; to illustrate their imperfections and ultimately, grow. But I also want a story with high stakes, interesting settings, and unforseen conflicts. Doing this well can be difficult, especially when you start mixing genres, but I enjoy getting the mix right and I'll always love telling stories.
