Crime fiction writer, non-fiction writer, blogger, lecturer

Background Information

I am now a crime fiction writer in addition to all the non-fiction work, and enjoy telling stories in a very different way

I grew up in New Zealand, took a PhD in Australia working on India, and since then have lived and worked in several different countries.

Living and working in other cultures has broadened my outlook considerably, while my training as an historian taught me to "read" situations and people as well as texts.  That background and approach has informed all my writing whether it be on sport, Asia, international affairs or anything else - the ability to "see"from another perspective is critical.

Birth Place
Christchurch,  New Zealand
Accomplishments

Gold and Silver at the 2012 eLit Electronic Book Awards for A House in Damascus: Before the Fall

Additional Information

My latest book is a crime novel set in Madras, India in the 1920s and features Superintendent Chris Le Fanu. A Madras Miasma tells the story of a murder in Madras, against the backdrop of political change and intercultural tension. My previous book was a non-fiction on living in Damascus immediately before the coming upheaval. In 2011 I published three new books including the biography of Arthur Galletti, and eccentric Anglo-Italian who worked in the Indian Civil Service in the early twentieth century
