I am an author of memoir and a poet of incongruities. Never able to settle on one style, I jump from tall buildings, and get stuck in muddy waters. Ups and downs become me, and I become them. Looking to talk with my mouth full of words, and taste recipes without rhyme.

Background Information

I first started reading poetry when I was stricken by 'The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.' I think the author was anonymous, but the poem appealed to my young sense of fate and the humor in it.

I began to write poetry on the dark side when I was ten and full of the angst of living and having survived paralytic polio and life in an iron lung as a young girl. I spent hours reading and perusing National Geographic and first read "Death be not Proud" and "Aku Aku." Culture, life and death matters, and finding hope and love in all circumstances have been my major influences. My Unitarian upbringing influenced me, as well, as the church school curriculum focused on delving into many world religions and the concept of the church being that we were assigned to develop our own theologies. This quest for truth in my life follows me still, and I change and grow as a poet and writer as a result.

The basic motivations in my writing is to express the creativity that I was surrounded by and was fostered in me by living in a family of artists. I can't tease out nature from nurture, but it seems like I am hard wired to create. I have more of a balance in my life and writing now, and strive to meet that balance in my work.

Accomplishments

I have read by invitation at the Boston Center for Adult Education in the "Women on the Verge" series. The Newton Free Library hosted an arts week with a display of sculpture and photography using found items from the closed Danvers State Hospital. I read poetry during the series. I attended intensive two weeks workshops at the William Joiner Center for War and Its Social Consequences, mentored by San Francisco poet George Evans. I attended Jane Katims Poetry Workshops at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.
