I never stopped being an idealist.

Background Information

My writing deals with ways for people to find happiness and freedom in life.  Like so many people, I do what I do because I want to create a more humane world, one in which we recognize our common spirit.  During my travels, from India to Tibet to South America, I have picked up nuggets of wisdom from people I call "Roadside Gurus."  It is both their ideas and mine I convey in my books.  I began my career as a Professor of Wildlife Ecology, studying the curious habits of small animals.  I've always been fascinated by the natural world and our part in it.  When I was a young man I'd sit under trees and write in my journal.  I was inspired by the nature writings of Henry David Thoreau, who had his cabin on a lake not so far from where I grew up (in Massachusetts).  Today I live in northern Arizona, but even now I still like to sit under trees... and not only that.  I also like to look deeply into campfires, climb the mountains, and gaze at the stars.  There's something about nature that has always inspired me.  Nature, I believe, is a guide that people can rely on, and it has provided the foundation for much of my work.  Aside from that, I have always had a knack for finding the underlying truths.
