Kirkus Reviews reviewed my book The Acorn Stories, saying that “A lush tangle of small-town life branches out in this engrossing collection of short stories.”


Background Information

Education: Belmont University (BA, 89), Hardin-Simmons University (MA, 91), and Texas Tech University (Ph.D., 96), all with a major in English. Writing published in Nightfire, Mesquite, Caprock Sun, Midwest Poetry Review, InterText, Yellow Dog, and many other publications.

My books…. The Acorn Stories. New Readings of Winesburg, Ohio. Holding Me Together. Degranon: A Science Fiction Adventure. The Acorn Gathering (editor/co-author). The Return of Innocence: A Fantasy Adventure (co-author). I also wrote the preface to Ronald L. Donaghe’s novel Lance.

Accomplishments

Two Texas Tech University English Department Harbinger Awards for Excellence in Short Fiction. Three StoneWall Society Pride in the Arts Awards (http://www.stonewallsociety.com). I was the June and July 2003 poet of the month at Antny’s Place (http://www.antnysplace.org/)!

At the Conference on Christianity and Literature, presented papers, "Pilgrim's Progress As Satire" (1990) and "C.S. Lewis's Till We Have Faces" (1991). At the 2001 Convention of The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA, http://www.nlgja.org/), spoke on the panel “Writing with a Texas Twist.”

At the 2003 Texas Book Festival, signed copies of The Acorn Stories. Dave Barry, Elmer Kelton, Amy Tan, Kinky Friedman, Joe Bob Briggs, Walt McDonald, Molly Ivins, First Lady Laura Bush, and former Texas Governor Ann Richards also appeared at the festival.
I also wrote the preface to Ronald L. Donaghe’s gay novel Lance: The Continuing Journals of Will Barnett.

July 2009: Degranon: A Science Fiction Adventure discussed in book Encyclopedia of Contemporary LGBTQ Literature of the United States.
