"A ship in the harbor is safe...but that's not what ships are made for." I believe in taking risks.

Background Information

I'm a native of Chicago, the Windy City, but I try not to be "windy" when I write my novels! "Brisk" is the word I'd use to describe my style of writing. My books are traditional mysteries on the cozy side, but I like to leave readers hanging at the end of each chapter, inducing folks to turn the page rather than close the book. Like the protagonist in my Caroline Rhodes mystery series, I work part-time as an ER nurse. My job continually provides me with intriging plot ideas -- as do the doctors where I work! Two of my books -- A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS and TO KILL A KING -- are set in hospitals. SOMETHING WICKED IN THE AIR and THE SCARECROW MURDERS, on the other hand, feature university settings. I'm currently working on a stand-alone romantic suspense, plus the fifth book in the Caroline Rhodes series. I'm also plotting out a new series with a very unusual protagonist. Hopefully, readers will enjoy this new series as much as they have my first one!

My first mystery, A DEADLY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, was a finalist in the 1996 Hemingway First Novel Competition under the title FOUR TO GO. DEADLY won a Readers' Choice Award for Best First Mystery at the Love is Murder 2000 mystery convention. SOMETHING WICKED IN THE AIR won a Readers' Choice Award in 2002, as did the entire Caroline Rhodes series that year. I'm very proud of these achievements and thankful to all the readers who made those awards possible.

Additional Information

My latest book in the Caroline Rhodes series is a Halloween mystery called THE SCARECROW MURDERS. In this story, Caroline tangles with a tough female rodeo contractor and a nasty college football coach while trying to clear her son's name after a student is murdered on All Hallow's Eve. In other news, fans of Mystery Scene can find my article on the small press movement -- "Small But Mighty" -- in the fall, 2005, issue of the award-winning magazine. I'll be touring the midwest and the south this autumn as part of The Mystery Mavens, a group of mystery writers including S. D. Tooley and Luisa Buehler. We'll be participating in the Western Kentucky Book Fair in Sturgis and the Tennessee Book Festival in Nashville in October, as well as at the Joliet Public Library Regional Author Fair and the Mt. Prospect Public Library in Illinois that same month. November will find us speaking at the PenDancer Alliance conference in Illinois. I hope you'll stop by and say hello if you're in the neighborhood for these events.
