Retired Teacher. Full-time author, perpetrator of terminological inexcatitudes: 'The truth may set you free, but don't let it spoil a good story.'

Background Information

Born Bahamian/British (Crewe); British education (Stafford - King Edward VI); recruited to educate the then Crown Colony of the Bahamas, which thereafter proceeded to educate him. Before 1973 the British Isles were the furthest 'out' islands of the Bahamas (it's about time we patronised the British).

Married a born- Bahamian lady (Van), who continued his education.

Collaborated with his wife in the production of three sons and various publications for their extended family, in and out of schools.

Became officially Bahamian when the Commonwealth went independent (he couldn't take the heat with all those born-Bahamians in the family).

Writes on a variety of subjects both fiction and non-fiction.

Loves poetry: Its rythms and rhymes are the heart-beats of life; its meanings are condensed emotion 'remembered in tranquillity' (Wordsworth).

Hates poetic affectations: Excuse for bad spelling and bad grammar; convoluted forms and abstruse thinking.

Birth Place
Crewe,  England

Military: National Service Medal (British); Suez Service Medal (British)
Professional: TC; Dip.Ed.(Speech and Drama); LCP (English Literature); MSc. (Educational Systems);PhD. (English Lit.)
Community Awards: Justice of the Peace for Eleuthera (2006)
Bahamian Awards and Certificates for Literature, Drama, TV and Radio Production,Festivals. National Anthologies, etc.

Additional Information

Lately the Oldham Family, has developed a sense of its place in the Global village. Hence , Vangerry wrote: "Long Memory", a novel which traces the ‘history’ of a multi-racial family from 1492 to the 2000 Millennium. It is set against the backgrounds of Mexico, the Bahamas, America and England. The novel also chronicles a five hundred year ‘love’ commitment; and intertwined with the main theme are several other romantic affairs. In addition to ‘telling stories’, ‘Long Memory’ also makes incidental observations on the human condition of contrasting cultures, and gives a ‘twist’ to the classical microcosm/macrocosm equation. A multitude of characters: Arawak, Aztec, Amerindian, Colonial British, Modern British and Modern Bahamian interact smoothly and sympathetically as their individual histories evolve and interweave. The concept of ‘Long Memory’ – a ‘personalization of ‘folk memory’ - gives continuity to the novel, and provides the ‘springboard’ for a surprising denouement. Work in Progress: 'Devil's Vacation'- no details as yet.
