Background Information

In 1956, Julius Ling and his wife were Hungarian refugees, landing in Australia, knowing no more than yes and no in English. After starting at the bottom, Julius worked as a machine operator at the Commonwealth Bureau of Statistics in Canberra, where he learned some English. In 1966, they immigrated to Canada and he worked at Statistics Canada in Ottawa. He and his wife are now retired and live in Victoria, British Columbia.

Guiding Stars was first published in 1999 in Hungary. In November of that year he received the following telegram: "Dear Mr. Ling. I just came back from Hungary where I have entered Guiding Stars into a highly prestigious annual contest named, `THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK OF THE YEAR' Its sole purpose is to select the best written stories for movie consideration. From over 3,000 entries, the jury has chosen but five books worthy of consideration. I am happy to report that your book was in the five. Congratulations!" Gy. Nyitrai, Chief Editor. At the final evaluation Guiding Stars was placed third.
