Pirate, painter, poet, pauper... well, you get the idea -- lives near (also the poet laureate of) the Los Angeles Harbor...

Background Information

I've been writing for over 25 years, the last fifteen being my most prolific. Unschooled and untrained in any of the popular styles of poetry form, I've still managed to impress numerous readers and publishers with my raw style.

From Oct. 1995 to Dec. 2006 I published The Lummox Journal, a monthly Literary - Arts journal which examined the creative process of the artistic mind, mostly writers/poets. I published an all poetry issue each April, as well as a tribute issue in August (1997 to 2000) to the late writer, Charles Bukowski. From 2002 to 2005 I also published a short fiction issue in August of each year. As of April 2007, The Lummox Journal is now online. Visit the website and click on the link.

In 1999 I began to publish The Little Red Book series (LRB) which now contains some 55 titles (as of 8-07). It is a veritable 'Who's Who' of Small Press Poets.

In 2000 I started publishing the LRB Master Series, a perfect-bound, flat spine series of books, the first one being The Wren Notebook by Rick Smith (which was nominated for a Pen Center West Poetry Book of the Year Award). Last year (Oct) I began the eleventh year publishing my magazine, The Lummox Journal.

I have been strongly influenced by Charles Bukowski, the Beat poets, Tom Waits, and Todd Moore (especially).

Accomplishments

Complete set of books including the Little Red Book Series on view at Rockefeller Library, Brown University.
Near complete collection of the Lummox Journal at the University of WI, Madison.
Two time nominee for The PushCart Prize.
Latest books from Lummox Press are: Fire and Rain - Selected Poems 1993-2007 Vol. 1, 184 poems in 158 pages. It is the first major collection of my poetry; On/Off the Beaten Path - 3 Road Poems, 114 pages; and El Pagano and Other Twisted Tales (short stories), 118 pages. All three are by RD Armstrong.

“Damn fine poems. You say things directly; without the smokescreen, without the academic mittens.” – Don Winter

Additional Information

LAST CALL: The Legacy of Charles Bukowski (published Aug. 2004) was voted best Poetry Anthology of 2005 by Muses Review. The latest chapbooks in the Little Red Book series include Digging my own Grave by Ed Jamieson, Jr, Outrun Your Fate by Glenn Cooper, The Painter by Marie Lecrivain, Tapping Ashes in the Dark by Robert Plath, As If by Angela C. Mankiewicx, Bare Feet & Broken Glass by Anita Wynn, and The Hunger by RD Armstrong (LRB 54). "Each poem becomes something more than a glance back in time, as Armstrong breathes life back into each memory with a combination of hard-won wisdom, brevity, and true tenderness." Marie Lecrivain, editor, poeticdiversity: the litzine of Los Angeles
