I was a panelist on the subject of characterization at the first Historical Novelist's (American) Conference. At the second conference, held in Albany, I gave a talk on "Independent Women of New York," an exploration of the unique cultural traditions which made New York a breeding ground for the women's movement.

"Genesee" is the story of a young woman caught between two worlds. Her mother, a Dutch runaway, dies at her birth, her father a proud Iroquois warrior. Abducted from the Indians by her Uncle, Genesee grows to womanhood, torn between loyalties. Scorned by many of her Dutch relatives, she wonders where she will find her true "home." When a handsome West Indian immigrant begins to court her, it seems as if her dreams have come true, but will they survive the Revolution's bloody frontier battles? "Independent Heart" is a romance/road/war/adventure story, set during the American Revolution. Angelica, a Dutch heiress attempts to make her way from British New York City back to Albany during the worst of the fighting along the Hudson Valley. Jack, who claims to be an ex-cavalry officer, gallantly offers to help her home. With a brutal fortune-hunter pursuing her, bandits, Indians and opposing armies in the way, Angelica has little choice but to put her trust in Jack, who, she quickly realizes, may not be exactly who he says.
