Somalia in poetry

Background Information

In the free
civilized world
and trees,
and far
far away
from the idiocy
of the
adult world
the sky hangs
its head, blue,
gazing upon
the forlorn boy;
the last thing on the
menís mind
as he is useless
in the wars.
In the darkest
hour of existence
when inanity
a way of life
Tears of concern
to resuscitate,
whatís left behind.

Time Will Tell

If these waves were lips spouting truth
If clan-locked hearts had space
Others to accommodate
Tomorrow though is another day
Another tide
on the footprints of truth.

If prayer was answered
Just the way we wanted it to be
A lover's song is sweet if practitioner is true ;
How does one drink honey from the bite of an aggressive bee?

My Somalia and Our Reality
Stars in my eyes that were so trim
My Somalia, my dreams, and that grim realism
I say, Allah! what an amazing trip!
If only I knew the why of that trick!

This is Your heaven
And there my spot
And thereís that rainbow
At every such grip.

Before the light
Thereís the shade
Behind the mountain
Thereís the plane.

Thereís Great Musa
And there the learned Khidr
Thereís the slaying of that guiltless child;
Or so it seemed to the eager Musa
Until absolute knowledge became the truce.*

This is Your heaven
And thereís my keenness
My dreams, my Somalia
And that grim realism
Actuality and hopes in collision
Ya Allah! Shall I ever know why the cactus tree
Teases the green grass?

* The Story of Musa (Moses) and Khidr is told in the Quran, for ref. please check: chapter 18, verses 60-82.

Mogadishu Times

Leisurely gait
Cares gentle like a motherís warmth.

Blowing like a monsoon wind
Reminiscences pervade the travelerís path...
A parable now generations down the road.

Pure soil, untainted by a neighborís blood
Voices of gaiety emitting from a friendís door.

Nightingales moving to Xamari beat
Muezzins ushering in the Lordís: Come to pray.

Siesta for the sunshine weary
Children tugged in...unwillingly.

Sweethearts sleepy from a dayís work
Windows venting
The Indian Ocean breeze
Mushy carpets vying for playful feet.

Mogadishu Times, those days of yore
Sights and Sounds of a nationís lore
Smartly dressed women galore.

Manly voices carrying weight
Firm clasp in the fatherís grasp
Harmony, order
Nights romantic
and Normal days.

Those Fridays at Xaraf
The question for her fellow...
Cinema Nasr or Hodon?

Find Another Partner

If hatred's all you can bring into this relationship
Then donít persecute me for being so picky.

Yes, my heart's big enough
But Iíve no accommodation
For someone elseís load.
