Warwick Cairns, author of About the Size of It and How to Live Dangerously(Pan Macmillan)

Background Information

Warwick Cairns was born in 1962 and grew up in Dagenham, in Essex.

He studied English and Psychology at Keele, and then a few years later he took a postgraduate degree in English Literature at Yale under the brilliant but eccentric Professor Harold Bloom.

He spent time drilling wells on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota and travelling in Africa with the explorer Wilfred Thesiger, before settling on a career in advertising.

He lives in Windsor with his wife Susan and his daughters Alice and Lucy.

His first book, About the Size of It was published in 2007, and his second, How to Live Dangerously, in 2008

Additional Information

'About the Size of It' started life as notes developed for a role as an 'expert witness' at the High Court in London, to explain why a market trader should be allowed to continue using 'illegal' measures on his stall, and became an all-encompassing theory for why human beings measure the world the way they do. Along the way it explains how to measure out drinks by spitting into your guests' glasses, how to arrive at a standard unit of mass by dropping apples all over your floor, and the relationship between the Space Shuttle and a horse's backside.
