I have enjoyed creative writing since I was a little girl but only began writing poetry when I was 14 years old.
To this day writing remains a necessary and enjoyable emotional outlet for me, that has got me through some difficult times, and as such I find it cathartic and theraputic. This tends to mean that my writing can be quite intense and is often brutally honest if a little melodramatic! But I hope that there is something in there that everyone can relate to.
I have put together three collections to date:
Dream Weaver - A short collection of the first poems that I wrote when I was 14 years old, which I have made an ongoing project of reworking.
Disarmed - The second and largest of my collections to date, contains mainly poetry but includes a few short stories and prose passages and was written when I was between the ages of 14 and 16 years old. As I'm sure you can imagine this means it absolutely teems with teen angst!
Fertile Times - A collection of poetry written when I was between the ages of 16 and 23 years old.
As I have got a little older my writing had become sadly less prolific but also a little mellower and less dramatic which I think is a good thing! It is still an important part of my life, however, and I am always looking to improve.
In poetry my favourite author and main influence is Emily Dickinson, although I also get a great deal of enjoyment and inspiration from song lyrics, particularly by artists such as Counting Crows, Matchbox Twenty, Train, Maroon Five, etc.
My favourite novelists are Toni Morrison (particularly Beloved) and Jeanette Winterson (particularly The Passion) whom I feel both write very poetically, and Dean Koontz whose novels as well as being a very entertaining read, also contain some wonderful and unusual imagery (particularly natural imagery)...
