A life-sized portrait inspired this book I called Crimson Snow.

Background Information

Why did I write Crimson Snow?

Blame my Mother. She worked as a housekeeper for a wealthy but aging socialite who possessed a striking resemblance to the late Grace Kelly. Her name was Marilyn Obolensky but I called her Mrs. O.

To me, Mrs. O always reminded me of the sad Miss Havisham figure out of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Jilted by time and a lost love, the widow past her days in her grand but decaying Grosse Pointe Farm home gazing up at a life-size portrait of her dead husband a Russian noble named Prince Serge Obolensky.

Prince Serge wore his imperial Russian uniform well; tall, pencil-thin, he radiated such confidence. Seeing it, I often asked myself what went so wrong in Russia that poor old Serge ended up in a room full of dust.

The answer is Crimson Snow.

In publishing most of my life, I work for The Dayton Daily News and live with my wife, daughter and son in Dayton.

Additional Information

A life-sized portrait inspired this book I called Crimson Snow. Set in 1916 Petersburg, its topic of a soldier re-entering the world reflects the reality of modern day America. I hope you enjoy it.

Crimson Snow: The Last Desperate Days of Imperial Russia
Power is the ULTIMATE HIGH. Civil war looms in the House of Romanov, as members of the royal family speak freely of a regime change. Only a young prince wounded by the war and a ballerina past her prime can stop the upcoming bloodshed. But even they may be too late...

Champagne Haze: Historical Fiction set in 1927 Paris, a story about the 'Lost Generation' trying to find themselves.
Paris is more than a destination... it is a state of mind. PRINCE SERGE KONSTANTIN, an idle aviator and exile living in Paris, sees the hypocrisy of the modern world of 1927. Cold and charming, this Russian is insulated by a bunch of brilliant lunatics and beautiful idiots who roam with him in the Left Bank's seedier bars. Set during a rugby reunion, CHAMPAGNE HAZE is a story surrounding four friends, a war, and a woman who changes their lives forever.
