Elder George Fishburne’s quest for excellence and his thirst for knowledge came with the able guidance of many capable and committed men. George Sr. provided a foundational work ethic, which ultimately evolved into the steadfast and tenacious nature embedded in his namesake. Upon his death in 1985 and during that very same difficult year, God provided still another fatherly and spiritual influence in the person of Bishop Victor T. Curry. Under his tutelage, Elder Fishburne blossomed and accepted his call into the gospel ministry. He was licensed on February 19, 1986 at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Miami, Florida. He quickly assumed the roles of Director of the Political Action Council and Armor-bearer to then Pastor Curry. Two short years later, Minister Fishburne was ordained and subsequently elevated to Reverend Fishburne as he continued to work feverishly in ministry. He developed and oversaw the Ministry of Social Concerns, which served as the comprehensive social services arm and ministry for the New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International. From the aforementioned Ministry of Social Concerns spawned ministry efforts to include; the Fruits of Harvest College & Career Ministry, Labour of Love Housing & Clothing Ministry, Garment of Praise Bereavement Ministry, Healing Hands Terminal Illness Ministry, and the Lord’s Kitchen #3 Feeding Ministry, a brainchild of the late Reverend Dr. Edward Victor Hill of Los Angeles, California. Additionally, Reverend Fishburne’s tireless efforts developed the framework for what is now the Vision to Victory Human Services Corporation, a not for profit social services entity owned and operated by New Birth and based in South Florida. In 1992, Reverend Fishburne was ordained to the office of Elder in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, an honor that ushered him into the presence of an array of anointed men and women of God. In addition to Bishop Curry, other men have also deposited mightily into his life including his godfathers Joseph Cromartie and Bishop Eddie L. Long, as well as mentors, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Pastor Joe Cephus Johnson, Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, Bishop Neil C. Ellis, Bishop Darryl S. Brister, and Dr. Alyn E. Waller.
It became apparent upon his matriculation from Miami Edison Senior High School in 1984 that Elder Fishburne would not be held hostage by mediocrity. He enrolled in Florida Memorial University (Formerly Florida Memorial College) and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in English. While there, he distinguished himself as a scholar and earned a cumulative 3.0 grade point average, as well as Dean’s List honors. His peers and fellow students elected him to lead them as Student Government President. Still unfazed by accolades or accomplishments, Elder Fishburne continues to labor vigorously and will secure his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University during the fall of 2008. Despite all of his academic and ministerial responsibilities, Elder Fishburne has worked as a Rehabilitative Services Counselor II and Associate Court Liaison with the Miami Dade County Department of Human Services-Diversion and Treatment Program for just over 17 years. In that capacity, he worked with adult and juvenile felony drug offenders as they attempted to refocus their lives and remain drug and alcohol free. Additionally, he has also labored as a law enforcement officer in the capacity of Deputy Marshal for the Fulton County Marshal’s Department and he is currently an Investigator for the State of Georgia.
Elder George Fishburne has diligently served Bishop Victor T. Curry for over 22 years as his armor-bearer, senior adjutant, personal assistant, and confidant. Throughout his period of service, the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church experienced tremendous prosperity, growth, and acclaim. The New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International also realized Gods’ continued favor as it grew to a membership of over 15,000 congregants in just 15 years. As one of the ministry’s eighteen founding members, Elder Fishburne played a pivotal role in New Birth’s numerical growth and spiritual development as he diligently served Bishop Curry and ministered to hundreds of invited pastors, intellectuals, gospel artists, professional athletes, elected officials, and the like through the Elder George Fishburne Jr. Armor-bearer Ministry. Elder Fishburne regularly lectures throughout the country concerning the dynamics of becoming an effective/consistent servant, ministerial/church protocol, as well as on subjects to include infrastructure, staff development, church growth and development, organization structures, and staffing. Additionally, he is an accomplished vocalist, tactician, and writer eager to do the will of God. He is the author the acclaimed literary work titled, ‘A Higher Calling… Serving God, His Leaders, and His People with Excellence’. The aforementioned hardcover book and accompanying study guide focuses on the lost discipline of service. Elder is also the Publisher of Tribute Publishing, a moderate sized publisher geared at locating and cultivating new and untapped literary talent.
