Read the book Oprah doesn't want you to! Even suburban housewives will love this Punk Rock fable!

Background Information

S. A. Robinson grew up in rural Levant, Maine. In 1984 he was expelled from Orono High School for violating the State's blue laws by having a mohawk on a public street after 7 p.m. on a week night. He has wandered the country ever since, calling Portland Maine, Burlington, Vermont, Boston, Massachuesetts, Providence, Rhode Island, Phoenix, Arizona, Virginia Beach, Virginia, San Francisco, California, Kalaheo, Hawai'i, Hollywood and New York his temporary homes. His major influences came from early eighties hardcore punk bands, (the humor, anger and nihilism) and from the literary works of Nabokov, Marquez, Camus, Kyszynski, Miller and other such pretentious sounding authors. When asked to write "Background & Major Influences" about himself, he tends to act like an NBA star and refer to himself in the third person. Please visit the "Driving with Shannon" web for more information.

Additional Information

MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL magazine's review of Driving with Shannon: Two teenage punk rockers run away from home (and Maine), travel across the US, and end up in the Southwest. This takes place in the early 1980's, when being a visible punk was a risky thing, liable to get you hassled by the Man and beaten down by rednecks and jocks, not to mention the hassle given by one's parents. With this in mind, you can get a small idea of the situations these kids get into driving through this great land. I am amazed at the knowledge of 80s punk and the genuine feelings of pain and hopelessness S. Robinson is able to convey in this book. He was there. This book is semi-autobiographical. This is a book for the punks. Nowadays, we seem to really love referencing. We have bands and zines who take entire styles of past punk glories and make it their own. Bands quote elder punk lyrics in their new songs. Zines and bands are named after previously existing punk songs. I dig this. Driving With Shannon is also hearkening to the past, the difference being that it actually does take place then. Every chapter is headed by a quote from a punk band, these quotes relating to the chapter's contents. From the Germs to GBH, to the Angry Samoans, the author is stunning in his ingenuity and insight as to how these songs REALLY related to the lives of these old punks. Almost as if all the punks had gotten together and written all the songs as a group. Driving With Shannon also successfully and truthfully (often with disgusting painfulness) deals with more average teenage situations, like sex/love and drugs. These experiences that are more shared with the rest of society are always treated from the angle of a young punk. Self-destruction, self-hate, pity, fashion, and ways to change one's mohawks are other topics talked about. So yeah, all folks can get some enjoyment from this shit. You straight, societal types will like the great storytelling. We old punks will love the reminiscing factor and how well the author is able to describe who we were. And the kids might understand our bitterness and hope and dedication if they read this prize sample of the world of the punks of the 1980s. This book is that good. Sven's second book is completed; "Dear Diary, the dream diaries of the subconscious." Check out a sample chapter in "MY SHORT STORIES." A screenplay about the 1940 Blitz on London is completed (excerpt in MY SHORT STORIES), and at present (2006) I am at work on a six part mini series about the North American Native Americans (Motechuzoma, King Phillip's War, The Trail of Tears, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull--READ PREVIEW IN "MY SHORT STORIES"-- and Geronimo), as well as a "user friendly" history book to accompany a 12 cd collection of songs and historical soundbites chronicling the 20th century; tracking the birth and development of jazz, country, blues, R&B, rock, folk, punk, funk, disco, hip-hop, metal and house. Research is underway for screenplays about Ted Williams, Edgar Allan Poe, Sacco and Vanzetti, World War One and Salvador Dali. I also write an independent "newspaper" for Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, where I make fun of entitled rich teenagers. I can't help myself.
