REVIEW: "McGinley Recreates Image of a Monster" by Gretchen McClain (The Norski Chronicle, 5/17/2002) When was the last time you thought about the Cyclops? You know, good old Polyphemus, the gory monster who was outsmarted and left blinded by Odysseus? Would you believe that Polyphemus wasn't such a brute? At least not according to the book just published by Jerry McGinley. CYCLOPS is an interesting take on what the story of mythology is from the point of view of one of the "not beautiful." It's easy to hate this creature when you think he is terrorizing our hero Odysseus. But when you hear his side of it, it's an entirely different story. Polyphemus narrates his own story, starting with his early lessons with Hermes. Hermes favors Polyphemus over his brothers because he is smarter. Of course, we get that from Poly. But considering he is trusted with the flying sandals and the helmet that makes him invisible, then perhaps he can be trusted to tell honestly his own story. Poly tells us of his difficulty in love, his ordeal with Odysseus, and his encounter with a very wise boy who helps him change his point of view. His life is a lonely one, but he seems wiser for the lessons he has learned. This book gives a new voice to an old "monster." The lesson for us, perhaps, is an old one: there are two sides to every story and don't judge a book by the cover. CYCLOPS is a fun read, and it makes you consider point of view very carefully. In one way, it's about the one-eyed monster who finally gets his say, but in another way, it's about any of us who have had days when we've felt like one.
