was born and raised in Watts, California during the noteworthy era of the Civil Rights Movement. She is the sixth of sixteen children born to Zebbie and Tasceaie Charles.
My initial influence was my maternal grandmother. Mamus, (Mom-us) as she was called by family members) died early in 1965 age 49 of bone cancer. Her short life is broadened in my book, "What Happened to Suzy." Mamus was Irish Catholic and Black. She was a warm-hearted woman who taught me a lot about my mixed heritage, (Black, Irish, Indian). She is the one person who told me my name was not "Suzy" but is Carol Denise. She specifically pinpointed to my large family how people are all the same. She did this specifically when I asked her why some of our family tree was white and others were Indian and Black. While my beloved sister, Barbara Elaine gave us love and care; Mamus taught me how to love people for who they are. Little did I know then, how long her salient advice to a nine year old would take me in life. I shall never forget my grandmother and her grand influences in my life.
BARBARA ELAINE
Other major influences in my life include: Barbara Elaine, my sister, (Debbie in "What Happened to Suzy"). Barbara dedicated her precious formative years -making sure my mother's large brood was cared for. She gave up dates, proms and caring for her own needs to put us all first, cooking fabulous meals; caring for mother and seeing to it that she picked up the slack while my mother ventured out of the home daily to work. I cherish Barbara and shall always love my sister unconditionally, for I have never met anyone so giving and I can't forget the huge sacrifices she made. Additionally, my sister, (who prides herself on making great eating treats) was and is the best cook hands down that I know!
BARACK OBAMA
The Kennedys, Sidney Poitier, Huey Newton, Malcolm X, Oprah Winfrey and everyday people who took risk to help others; (like my sister) are my instant heroes.
I am particularly fond of individuals like Barack, (win or lose) for having actively participated in making major contributions to the overall coming together of people as a whole. With recognition that Oprah has all she needs in life materially, Oprah is determined to share her wealth with individuals here and abroad greatly benefiting others by her enormous benevolence, i.e., the Angel Network.
THE ARTS
I love original works like, "Gone With the Wind" & "Peyton Place". Lana Turner, Betty Davis, Susan Hayward, Hallie Berry, Dorothy Dandrige, Katherine and Audrey Hepburn and Joan Crawford are my favorite actresses. My God, I forgot Vivien Leigh! Favorite actors are Denzel Washington, Jim Kelly, Leslie Howard, and Richard Roundtree. My favorite writers include: Phylis Wheatley, Richard Wright, Edgar Allen Poe, Danielle Steele, Dorothy Raymond, Claude Brown, K'wan and John Steinbeck. Seeing such artistry from writing on the screen had a lot to do with my inspiration to be a writer too.
Before Metalious, as in Grace Metalious, I knew in the seventh grade I wanted to be a writer. It was then when I wrote a "Stars Up In The Sky". The writing journey has been a long bumpy road...But, it has been well worth the effort.

About A Celebration of Women Writers
Carol's Inductment took place in May 2009
The Celebration of Women Writers is developed in collaboration with the On-Line Books Page, edited by John Mark Ockerbloom.
Statement of Purpose:
The Celebration of Women Writers recognizes the contributions of women writers throughout history. Women have written almost every imaginable type of work: novels, poems, letters, biographies, travel books, religious commentaries, histories, economic and scientific works. Our goal is to promote awareness of the breadth and variety of women's writing.
All too often, works by women, and resources about women writers, are hard to find. We attempt to provide easy access to available on-line information. The Celebration provides a comprehensive listing of links to biographical and bibliographical information about women writers, and complete published books written by women. (See What's New! for the most recent authors and books added to the listing.)
We are also actively involved in extending those resources. A major focus of the Celebration is the development of on-line editions of older, often rare, out-of-copyright works. We choose works from a range of areas to indicate the variety of interests of women writers. (See "What's Local!" By Author or By Category for a listing of books and biographical information made available on-line by the Celebration of Women Writers.)
