K.J. Stevens hails from Alpena, Michigan.

Background Information

K.J. Stevens (born June 4, 1973) is an American novelist and short story writer. His writing has appeared in The Adirondack Review, Fluid Magazine, Me Three, Circle Magazine, Cellar Door, Prose Ax, Temenos, and BloodLotus. Pilgrims Bay, Stevens first novel, was released in 2007. All of his work has been published through Lulu.

Garret Schuelke, staff writer for the Alpena Community College student newspaper, The CrossCut, has described Stevens' writing style as minimalist. Ernest Hemingway, J.D. Salinger, Gertrude Stein, Amanda Davis, Sylvia Plath, Raymond Carver, David Shaw, Thomas Mann, and Flannery O'Connor have been attributed as his influences.

Stevens was born in Alpena, Michigan, but grew up in Maple Ridge Township.

Stevens attended Central Michigan University up to December 1999, where he published his first work with fellow Michigan writer Travis Mulhauser, titled Corvallis Road. Afterwards, he studied creative writing at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

He currently resides in Garden City, MI.

1995 - Poem, Broken, accepted for publication in Blind Man’s Rainbow.

1996 - Poem, An Aviary, auctioned off as part of a painting/poem combination to benefit charity. Auction, sponsored by The Alpena Zonta Club.

1996 - Poem, Clandestine Madness, published in The Open Scroll.

1996 - Published several poems (Ablution, Clandestine Madness, To Live Again), in Sabine.

1996 - Poem, Out of Love, published in The Oak.

1997 - Published two short stories (Love in the Frozen Food Aisle and Working) in Sabine.

1998 - Poem, Poetry is Dead, published in Framework - Central Michigan University’s literary magazine.

1998 - Received letter of recognition for second place in Carol Arnett Creative Writing Contest at Central Michigan University.

1998 - Self published Introspection, a poetry chapbook.

1999 - Short story, An Accident, and a poem, Eve, published in Framework.

1999 - Poem, My Hometown, featured in an auction to benefit charity - sponsored by The Alpena Zonta Club.

1999 - Self published Corvallis Road, a collection of short stories, with fellow writer, Travis Mulhauser.

2000 - Four poems accepted for publication in the WriteGallery’s Summer update (June). The Reach, broken boughs, Late Night at The Alpena County Fair, and The Fall.

2000 - Short story, Home, accepted for publication by Sulisa Publishing for short story anthology.

2000 - Short stories featured in Sabine’s The Vault, a section devoted to writers of past issues. Stories featured are Love in the Frozen
Food Aisle, Merry Christmas, and In Debt.

2000 - Short story, The Drive, recognized as one of ten finalists in a contest sponsored by Hayden’s Ferry Review (Arizona State University) and Prentice Hall Publishing.

2000 - Short story, Flag Day, featured in Prose Axe magazine.

2000 - Poem, A Highway Stop, featured in Issue 3 of Comrades magazine.

2000 - Poem, A Candle in the Storm (part of a painting/poem combination with artist, Rita Stevens) featured in Alpena Zonta Club auction to raise money for charity.

2001 - Short story, Driving in the Rain, published in Events Quarterly.

2001 - Short story, Another Sunday, accepted for publication by 12Gauge magazine.

2001 - Short story, Flag Day, nominated for Preditors and Editors “Best Short Story of 2000” by Prose Ax magazine.
