After twenty years of writing a local travel book and writing travel and humorous articles for magazines and newspapers I decided to write a book about writing a travel book. There are several books out on travel writing and loads of web courses that promise fame, fortune and free travel. However, they all concentrate on writing travel articles (a field that frankly pays very little but sometimes offers free trips).
However, almost all the books on travel writing ignore travel books. When they do approach the subject it is always in the "how to get a writing gig with Lonely Planet or other well-known publishers" variety. In reality there are hundreds of books put out by small niche or regional publishers and a host of self-published books in the travel field. How to construct such a book, how to create a book proposal and how to find a publisher by understanding your category and audience is the nub of this book.
"Crafting the Travel Guidebook" also covers such essentials as travel writing and basic research, editing and proofing, finding proper photographs and building up your credentials. The book is available from Amazon.com and other online retailers. It can be ordered from your local bookstore. Also available at half-price as an e-book from booklocker.com.
