James Mathews grew up in El Paso, Texas, as well as a variety of army bases throughout the country. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he graduated from the University of Maryland and received an M.A. in Writing from the Johns Hopkins University. He is also a member of the District of Columbia Air National Guard and since 9/11 has been deployed to Iraq twice (in 2003 and 2006). These experiences have figured into many of his stories and in his longer works.
His short fiction has been published widely in many literary journals including The Florida Review, The Greensboro Review, Carolina Quarterly, and The Northwest Review.
His first book - a short story collection entitled Last Known Position - was published by the University of North Texas Press in November 2008.
He is at work on his third novel.
