Following E.B. White's advice, Ellis spent "the first forty years of his life doing something else" before turning to writing.

Background Information

Ellis, served in the Air Force during the Korean War, and graduated from the Honors College, Michigan State University.  He headed the Crime Analysis Unit of the St. Louis Police Department; worked as a senior researcher for good government organizations in Hartford and Boston; and headed the Planning Bureau of the Mass. State Police.  After, he worked in management positions with the U.S. Justice, Treasury, and Labor departments and was appointed a New England regional director of the Department of the Interior.  A frequent contributor to periodicals, he also authored Mad Jack Percival:  A Legend of the Old Navy, Naval Institute Press, 2002 and contributed to two police administration textbooks.

His career helped develop his research skills as well as a deep appreciation of the history and lore of New England, themes that run through his writing.

Birth Place
West Barnstable, MA US

Lowell lecturer, USS Constitution Museum (2002). Former president, West Barnstable, MA Historical Society. Life member, West Parish Memorial Foundation (historic preservation).

Additional Information

My latest book - "A Ruinous and Unhappy War: New England and the War of 1812" was released by Algora Publishing early in 2009 and is available in hardcover or paperback from Amazon, Barnes and Noble as well as the publisher. The 317-page book relates the untold and fascinating story of the Second War of Independence as it played out in that oldest region of the country - New England. Material from period sources (diaries, journals, logs, letters, government documents, newspapers) form the core of the account that presents tales of common folk caught up in unwanted turmoil. The book is geared to the upcoming bicentennial of the war.
